ChainCatcher news, according to Cryptopolitan, the "Onchain Summer Awards" hackathon competition held by Coinbase's Base network has come under scrutiny, accused of awarding prizes to fraudulent applications linked to employees.
The competition took place last month, attracting over 500 development teams, with a total prize pool of $200,000. However, after the results were announced on October 7, developers claimed to have found issues with the winning projects. Alanas, co-founder of Ogvio, discovered that the second-place project owatch and the third-place project Opi Trade appeared to be AI-generated basic web pages, lacking actual functionality.
Even more concerning, the investigation revealed that these fraudulent projects had connections to Coinbase employees. Many legitimate teams with functioning products lost to these "shell" projects. Angry developers have demanded explanations from the Base team on social media, but the organizers have yet to respond to the related allegations.
